BUG YOUR FRIENDS!
The ‘Wriggle and Crawl’ topic in my daughter’s classroom is well under way now and at the weekend we did some searching online for amazing minibeasts. Serendipitously we also found this brilliant website at My Learning. It allows you to build your own super minibeasts from a selection of parts from actual bugs. So, you might choose the wings of a peacock butterfly, the head of a green tiger beetle, the legs of a grasshopper and the superpowers of web spinning and toting a venomous sting. Then you get to name your new uber-bug and…and this is the icing on the bug-shaped-bun… you can then print off a Top Trumps-esque stats card and potentially challenge your friend, sibling, parents, etc. to a comparison-based card game! Genius!
If and when you tire of that then enjoy the beautiful book Butterfly Park by Elly MacKay. This is the story of a little girl who brings her community together to introduce butterflies to her local park and it is delicately but glowingly illustrated with paper-cut sets and figures. It is recommended for ages 4-7 but it would be a joy to readers of any age.
